Alzheimer’s walk to make memories matter

The Walk for Alzheimer’s being held at Brock University Sunday is aiming to raise $85,000 for the local organization.

More than 300 walkers are expected to attend the annual event, said Terry McDougall, director of fund development for the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region.

“All of the funds we raise stay in Niagara Region,” she said. This will be Brock’s fourth time hosting the walk. In the past three years, the walks have raised more than $200,000, McDougall said.

There are 8,962 people living with dementia in Niagara and Alzheimer’s Disease accounts for 64 per cent of cases, McDougall said.

The walk is one of the society’s biggest fundraisers.

But, it’s about more than raising money.

“It’s also about education and awareness,” said McDougall.

The indoor walk will take participants to stations promoting information about everything from making choices and brain teasers to therapy dogs and living a healthy lifestyle.
“Walkers receive goodies along the route and information about maintaining a healthy brain,” said Kristen Smith, Manager of Student and Community Outreach. “It’s interactive.”

She said hosting the event at Brock is a great way to reach out to the community and get students and staff involved.

McDougall said a new feature this year is an art show in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre showcasing artwork by people with dementia and their caregivers.

“We are doing a progressive painting so there will be a blank canvas and people will be invited to leave their mark,” she said.

In the Ian Beddis Gym, there will be a health fair with information about community services and supports, McDougall added.

Registration for the event begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 with the walk starting at 11 a.m.

The event takes place in Brock’s Walker Complex. Free parking is available.
