Brock’s United Way campaign reaches $140,000 goal

The Brock University community has done it again, and this time a month early. The University’s United Way campaign has reached its annual fundraising goal of $140,000.

“It’s fantastic,” said Brock’s United Way campaign co-chair Kevin Lawr. “We want to raise as much money as we can, but also make the goal achievable.”

Raising money for local organizations is something Lawr is passionate about.

“I like to think that in making a difference I am part of a team that is making our community better, even in a small way,” he said.  “The word ‘community’ means something. It’s not just a group of houses — we share things and need to help each other.”

Lawr emphasized the importance of donating to the United Way specifically.

“The need is great within the community and the United Way funds lots of agencies,” he said. “The benefit of supporting the United Way is that they have the structure in place to donate money efficiently.”

This year’s campaign consisted of several prominent events including the Souper Star Lunch, Trivia Night and Halloween Spin-A-Thon. Fundraising efforts were further bolstered by donations from members of the Brock community.

Lawr stressed the importance of contributing via payroll deduction.

“We want people to fill out their pledge form and return it to HR,” he said.

This year’s fundraising total will continue to grow until the end of December and pledge forms may be dropped off at any time.

The committee is in need of volunteers for next year’s campaign.
