The Brock community gathered in the Ian Beddis Gymnasium this morning to pay solemn tribute to Canada’s war veterans.

The ceremony included Aboriginal drummers, a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace” and readings from Jewish, Christian and Islamic scripture. The event, organized by Campus Ministries, also included a reading of “In Flanders Fields” and the laying of wreaths.

While war is often debated, “we cannot doubt nor question the commitment and the courage of thousands of our fellow countrymen and women who lost their lives at an age far too young in the name of the values we all hold dear,” said David Galston, a university chaplain.

President Jack Lightstone said “we must never lose hope or stop striving for peace.

“No one knows that better than those who have gone to war for us. It matters not one iota that securing peace is hard or peace is elusive or that humanity so easily falls back into aggression. We must honour our veterans and their fallen comrades also by working for peace.”
