Farmer’s Market set to flourish amidst construction work

Even as construction tears up the nearby grass, the popular Brock Farmer’s Market will return to Jubilee Court this Friday to launch its 2010 season.

Starting at 11:30 a.m., vendors will return for another summer of Friday markets selling lunches, baked goods and produce. The fenced-off construction zone in Jubilee Court will shrink by Friday and market stalls will be set up in the remaining area, said Iain Glass, managing director of Community and Ancillary Services.

“People are anticipating it,” he said.

This week, excavation and drilling on the Jubilee Court construction project hit full stride. A trench box was installed into a gaping six-metre pit, and a boring machine was lowered in to drill through the bedrock. The trench box gives workers a secure place to operate in excavated areas. Recent rains have left soils wet and saturated, and potentially unstable.

The excavation area near Mackenzie Chown A will remain fenced until the work is completed. It is anticipated the drilling will continue Wednesday and Thursday. On Monday, workers will begin boring a new sanitary sewer line beneath the Chown complex and towards the Plaza Building.

In the meantime, the Brock Farmer’s Market continues to grow. This year, there are six more vendors for a total of 19, Glass said. For the first time ever, there is a waiting list of vendors.

Items for sale at the market will include:

  • fresh produce and preserves
  • cheese
  • cured local meats
  • breads and pastries
  • elephant ears
  • crafts

Brock Dining Services will continue to serve lunch at the market, although this year there will be additional options other than hot dogs and sausages. There will also be musical entertainment provided by members of the Brock community.

The market runs on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until the end of September. However, unlike previous years, this fall a year-round indoor Friday market will start in October in the new Niagara Market.
