Visit from Consul General for India and Canada-India Business Council - February 11, 2014
On Tuesday, February 11, 2014, Brock University welcomed the new Consul General Ankhilesh Mishra from the Consulate General of India in Toronto, and Gary Comerford, Vice-Chairman, Canada-India Business Council. This was the Consul General’s first visit to Brock University, during which he enjoyed a full day on-campus learning about Brock and the Niagara Region. Gary Comerford has 40 years of experience in the Canadian financial sector, here in Niagara as well as in Toronto. In the early years of Brock he taught courses in Marketing and Business.
During the visit, Consul Mishra had the opportunity to meet with several faculty, staff, and senior administrators (full list below), including Brock University President, Dr. Jack Lightstone and Dean of the Goodman School of Business, Dr. Don Cyr, from whom the visit originated. The purpose of the visit was to make Canada-India business connections, explore opportunities for increased student recruitment and enhanced research collaboration, as well as to introduce Consul Mishra to Brock University.
Consul Mishra also met with eight students from India, many of whom are undertaking their MBA studies at Brock. Consul Mishra spoke to the students about the possibilities of future Canada-India collaborations, the ways in which the two countries can engage in mutually-beneficial partnerships, and the role that young, educated people can play in those collaborations. The students said that they were inspired by his words, and all spoke highly of Brock and their experiences in Canada.
Brock is already engaged in activities in India, in areas including the Centre for Applied Disability Studies, whose faculty members have helped set up schools and services for children with autism, in collaboration with their colleagues in Chennai.
The Consul General said that he truly enjoyed his visit to Brock and that he looks forward to coming back again to learn more about the unique and important role the university plays in and with the community around us. Many areas for future collaboration were identified during the visit, and Brock faculty and staff are eager to continue to engage with India.
