Visit from Brazil-Canada Technological and Professional Fellowship Program - April 10, 2014

On Thursday, April 10, 2014, Brock University welcomed a delegation from a group of Brazilians who are being hosted by Niagara College during their participation in a Canada-Brazil Science without Borders national mission. As part of that mission, 43 teachers are visiting 19 different colleges throughout Canada via the mediation of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC). The delegates included:

  • Dr. Luciano Toledo, Agronomy-Soil Science Professor, Instituto Federal Espírito Santo (IFES), and Visiting Researcher at Niagara College
  • Giordana Sperandio, Elementary/High School Teacher
  • Prof. M.Sc. Christian Puhlmann Brackmann, International Relations Officer, Institute Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia Farroupilha
  • Klessis Lopes Dias, Pro-Dean for Research, Graduate Studies and Innovation, Instituto Federal Amapá
  • Prof. M.Sc. Victor da Costa Wanderley, Chief of Innovation Officer, Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia Pernambuco
  • Accompanied by Jos Nolle, International Consultant, Niagara College

The delegates were interested in learning about how Brock’s international offices are organized and how Brock organizes its research activities. The Federal Institutes in Brazil, at which these delegates work, are trying to introduce more applied research next to some of the fundamental research they already do. The delegates were particularly interested in hearing about how Brock engages with industry in its research and innovation activities, and how Canadian universities and colleges work together. Some of the discussion revolved around strategies to bring industry partners and projects to the classrooms and students.

While at Brock, the delegates had the chance to meet with:

  • Dr. Kevin Kee, Associate Vice-President, Research
  • John Kaethler, Director, International Services and Programs Abroad
  • Sheila Young, Director, Brock International
  • Jade Bowie, International Affairs Assistant, Brock International
  • Cassie Price, Coordinator, BioLinc

During the meetings, Dr. Kevin Kee said, “[Brock is] very keen to grow our connections with Brazil.” In follow up to the visit, the delegates are hoping to connect with other Brock faculty and staff members, and to learn more about Innovate Niagara. There is potential for future Brazilian teachers to visit Brock and Niagara over the next couple of years.

Brock has five partner institutions in Brazil, is actively involved in research collaboration with institutions in Brazil, and has welcomed over 150 undergraduate and graduate Brazilian students through the Canada-Brazil Science without Borders program over the past two years.
