Sodexo Canada donates $6 million to a Bold New Brock

Today Brock University was presented with a $6-million gift from Sodexo Canada for campus renewal and for enhanced student awards.
The donation -- part of The Campaign for a Bold New Brock -- will improve the student learning at the University by expanding our informal learning space and helping to alleviate space challenges on campus.
Sodexo and Brock also announced the construction of a new $9.5-million Niagara Marketplace project, which was also unveiled at today's event.
"This generous gift will not only help us hit the goal of our major capital fundraising campaign, but will also help us with our campus renewal to improve the student learning environment," said Jack Lightstone, President, Brock University. "We are honoured to have in Sodexo a partner who sees not just its important core responsibility here at Brock, but a partner who shares our longer vision of the urgency to build the kind of innovative, knowledge-advancing institution that Niagara and Canada needs."
The Niagara Marketplace project will involve the enclosure of the Thistle Complex courtyard to develop a 500-seat dining and social space. This construction will free up the current Tower cafeteria to be converted to a marche-style marketplace featuring fresh and healthy food choices.
This initiative will showcase the tastes of Niagara and further connect Brock with its surrounding communities. The multi-purpose space will eventually house a year-round farmer's market at the University.
"This facility will not only provide the Brock community with a great place to eat, but with a great place to meet," said Tom Arkell, Director of Community and Ancillary Services. "Also, the mandate for this new culinary asset means Brock Food Services will increasingly be reaching out to local growers as we become aware of new opportunities to do so."

"The Niagara Marketplace will be one of only two or three such facilities at campuses all across Canada -- and once it's built, it will be a showpiece for Sodexo and for Brock.

Construction on the Niagara Marketplace is scheduled to begin this month and be completed by January 2010. The project comes with a self-financing business model that will not take a penny from University operating budgets.
