nGen New media incubator will position Niagara as an industry leader

A significant transformation is underway in Niagara.

With the recent $245,000 funding announcement from the Ontario Ministry of Culture through the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) to support the creation of nGen (Niagara Interactive Media Generator), the region is positioning itself as an industry leader in interactive digital media development in Ontario and the world. nGen will build upon an already existing vibrant interactive media sector in Niagara, which includes Silicon Knights, Ontario's largest video game developer.

The project will create a hub and foster synergies between creative and enabler enterprises, local arts and culture industries in the region, as well as the educational programs, research and development expertise, and infrastructure at Brock University and Niagara College. Other partners advancing this initiative include Interactive Ontario, the Regional Municipality of Niagara, the City of St. Catharines, the Niagara Economic Development Agency and the Niagara Enterprise Agency.

"Building on the success of the Interactive Arts and Science program in the Faculty of Humanities at Brock, we envisioned the development of an enterprise that would support the future potential of our students as leaders, creators and designers in the growing area of interactive digital media, a new pillar of a sustainable diversified economy in Niagara and Ontario,” says Jack Lightstone, President, Brock University. “This vision, combined with the enthusiastic support of our partners in government and the region, is now one step closer to realization as a result of the creation of nGen.”
