Biology is the
study
of life. In the Department of Biological Sciences,
research and
teaching
interests range from molecular biology and
physiology to ecology and behaviour. The main
themes are:
Evolution and
Ecology:
the patterns of life in time
and space.
Development and
Function:
the mechanisms by which living things are formed
and maintain themselves.
Biology is important since it teaches us to
understand and appreciate humanity's place in
nature and our relationship to the rest of the
living world. It also helps us to understand
ourselves - both in health and in sickness -
and so assists the art of medicine.
