BioLinc Residents

At BioLinc, we help bioscience and applied health start-up businesses to thrive in the early stages of their company's life by providing them with private and shared office suites, wet lab space, shared collaborative space, meeting rooms, shared use of office and lab equipment, business counselling and training and networking opportunities. Assisting these companies during their start-up phase helps drastically reduce the potential for failure, and helps build a stronger foundation for company growth. In August 2013, the BioLinc Residency Advisory Committee accepted the first 3 resident companies to join us at BioLinc.

Trivium Industries

Trivium Industries manufactures biodegradable and compostable cosmetic and pharmaceutical packaging in Welland, Ontario. The corn-based containers look and function essentially the exact same as plastic but decompose within 180 days of being buried. Trivium offers a wide variety of containers shapes, sizes, colours and customs design.

Trivium Industries has been working with Dr.Paul Zelisko, a professor in the Chemistry department to develop a silicon-based coating that will line the inside of the biodegradable containers. The research with Brock University's Chemistry department, has allowed the containers to be filled with virtually any cosmetic or pharmaceutical product and will be protected by a patentable Green Barrier coating. Dr. Zelisko’s research at Brock includes exploring the use of enzymes as a green method for synthesizing polymeric silicon species. David D'Angelo, the founder and President of Trivium Industries, graduated from Brock University in 2012 with a General Arts Degree with a focus in business. David comes from an entrepreneurial family and while at Brock, David began the early plans for Trivium Industries in an entrepreneurship class, when he wrote a business plan on biodegradable cutlery (forks, knives and spoons) that would be made in Canada rather than Asia. He then won Brock University’s 2012 Nicol Entrepreneurial Business Competition and became a National Finalist.

As David continued through his final year at Brock, he became very passionate about the idea and upon graduating David focused full-time on starting Trivium Industries. Trivium Industries will be using laboratory space and shared office space at BioLinc.

RegenaStem

RegenaStem is a company that provides a safe and effective clinical processing and a preservation platform to support the science and applications being discovered.  RegenaStem wants to allow healthy individuals the ability to store their own younger, stronger and healthier adult stem cells and regenerative cells, providing them with a ‘bio-insurance’ for their future needs. RegenaStem has a unique platform to process adipose tissue to isolate the adult stem cells and regenerative cells without the use of a harmful enzyme.

RegenaStem will be working with Brock University researchers to conduct research refining protocols and techniques for the isolation of stem cells.  RegenaStem is currently working with Dr. Jeff Stuart in the Biological Science department at Brock University. Dr. Stuart is an associate professor and his researcher involves gaining a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms permitting long-lived cells to maintain their functional integrity throughout the lifespan.

RegenaStem will be using a laboratory and shared office space at BioLinc.

Exact Delivery Inc.

Exact Delivery is currently working with Dr. Thad Harroun, an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Brock University. Dr.Harroun’s research at Brock focuses on the biophysics of lipid-peptide interactions. Dr. Harroun is an advisor and Technical Director for Exact Delivery Inc, and also is a mentor to Drew.

Drew is currently a PhD candidate in Physics at Brock University.  He is working towards putting a new oral hygiene product on drugstore shelves with help from the W. Garfield Weston Foundation. Drew has also received funding from Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) Smart Start, and private investment to match the OCE Smart Start funding. Drew started Exact Delivery in 2012 and is looking to improve existing technologies and processes in the health and wellness industry.

Exact Delivery will be using the laboratory and shared office space at BioLinc.

Whiting Equipment Canada

In April 2014, Whiting Equipment Canada took residency at BioLinc as a Collaborator. Whiting is a diversifed designer and manufacturer of heavy industrial equipment with expertise in chemical processing, heavy and light rail maintenance, metallurgical equipment, materials handling and equipment services. BioLinc will provide Whiting with use of laboratory and office space. Whiting will be using BioLinc's lab facilities at Brock University for bench scale, glassware tests to determine solubility, crystallization habit and physical property data of inorgranic chemical solutions.

The collaboration with BioLinc and Whiting will allow the introduction of process engineering capability, mentoring, and advisory services to Brock University through BioLinc.
