What to Expect on the First Day

When you arrive at Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area, a BaseCamp representative will meet you at the front gate and direct you to the BaseCamp campsite. BaseCamp staff and your trip leaders who are current students or recent graduates from Brock University will be there to meet you. After all the participants arrive, your trip leaders will give you an overview of what is to come, give you a safety briefing and safety practice lessons, and play a variety of group games. You will finish your first day around the campfire with a hardy meal and a new group of friends.

A Typical Day
You will likely be getting up early so that you can make the most of your day at the cliff. Breakfast time is usually filled with conversation and stories of the previous night and prospects for the day ahead. After breakfast, your trip leaders will encourage you to pack your daypack and fill your water bottles so that the group can hike the short distance to the rock climbing site.

You’ll spend your day top-rope rock climbing on one of Ontario’s premier natural rock walls on the Niagara Escarpment. Remember to bring your camera! You will be surprised how quickly you and your trip mates become friends and how fast three days fly-by. Rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, playing Frisbee and football are all part of this exciting BaseCamp experience.

Dinnertime is a very special time of the day. As your trip leaders prepare dinner, you have the opportunity to practice your outdoor skills, help cook, hang out with your new group of friends, read a book, or simple get lost in the beauty of nature. Typically, some of the time after dinner is spent on our orientation curriculum where your trip leaders cover many pertinent topics that will help you, as an incoming student, transition into your first year at Brock University. Our trip leaders are current upper year or alumni from Brock University who can answer questions, offer advice and share some of their tricks they’ve learned to be successful at university! Around the campfire, daylight slips into darkness with a roasted marshmallow and a star-filled sky.
