“Entering this undergraduate program was a great stepping stone for me in that not only is it centered on the biomedical model of health, but there is much emphasis on the human and social aspects of health. I believe that this balance between the art and science of health care has been truly instrumental during my time in medical school thus far.

It was also through this Health Science program that I had the opportunity to participate in my most enjoyable and productive learning experience. During the spring of 2008, I had the unique opportunity to travel to Honduras for two weeks with a team of students and a professor. This trip was a component of an international health course during which I was provided with a theoretical and practical learning opportunity to examine international health issues within a developing country. I enjoyed learning firsthand the differences in health and disease patterns as well as in the delivery and access to services. In addition to these issues, I was able to evaluate the effects of cultural determinants of health. Not only did I have a productive educational experience but I was also able to learn a great deal about myself in the process, such as my interest in addressing health disparities within a third world nation.

Another driving force behind selecting Brock University was Med Plus. This program is a unique four year co-curricular program designed to provide students with the skills necessary for success in a health care related professional program such as medical school. I was able to gain a better understanding of a practitioner’s role in today’s health care system, gain exposure to numerous health-related professional careers, and develop the teamwork and leadership skills that I will need to employ throughout the remainder of my education and career.

It is a result of all these incredible opportunities that my undergraduate education has provided me with an excellent foundation on which to build upon during my time as a medical school student and as a future physician.
The best advice I can offer to anyone considering a career in health care is to follow their dream. Even though the journey may seem long and windy with a lot of bumps along the way, with an open mind you will be able to achieve your goals. The Health Science program at Brock University is a great way to prepare for any career in health care as it provides numerous opportunities to become involved in the school, local, national, and international communities.”
