After graduating from the Child Health program at Brock University in June of 2006, I was accepted into the Child Life Studies Full-Time Diploma Program at McMaster University in September of 2006. After graduating from the Child Life Studies program at McMaster University in April of 2007, I was hired as a Child Life Specialist with the Child Life Services Department in the Paediatric Unit at Windsor Regional Hospital.

The Child Life Studies program is competitive as only 10 students are accepted each year. The program is eight months long and consists of course work, internships and an independent study. The program is designed as a problem-based learning atmosphere. The areas of study consist of Function of Play 1 & 2, Family Systems, Community Issues, Group Processes, Leadership and an Independent Study. The child life studies program trains one to be a skilled member of the health care team. Child life specialists are skilled in developmental milestones, therapeutic interventions, preparing children for health care experiences, play, advocacy, and coping and distraction techniques. Play is used as a healing modality, to progress development and to provide a sense of normalcy in an unfamiliar and potentially threatening environment.

Q: What is your current job title and what are your responsibilities?
My current job title is a Child Life Specialist.

My responsibilities are:

  • Ensuring confidentiality of patients
  • Working as an interdisciplinary team member
  • Supervising and assigning volunteer’s tasks
  • Preparing children for medical procedures
  • Teaching coping and distraction techniques
  • Providing play and medical play opportunities
  • Supporting children and their families during stressful healthcare experiences
  • Charting interactions with patients and their families
  • Recording of patient interactions for statistical purposes
  • Implementing programs and assisting in the delivery of child life services.

The Child Health program at Brock focused on both child development and community health sciences, which are underlying components of the Child Life Studies program. The Paediatric Exercise course that I took in my fourth year introduced me to the problem-based learning atmosphere and I was able to transfer this type of learning style to the Child Life Studies program. The majority of courses taken prepared me for the Child Life Studies program, but specifically knowing child developmental milestones, theoretical historians, parenting and how to critically evaluate were vital components of the Child Health program that prepared me for the Child Life Studies program and my career as a Child Life Specialist.

My most memorable experience at Brock was the professors constant willingness to help and volunteer additional assistance. Furthermore, the small University atmosphere allowed a number of social relationships to form.

The Child Health program is for you if you are interested in children and health. The program offers a combination of courses from child and youth studies and community health sciences, thus your selection of courses are diverse, allowing you to choose areas of study that appeal to you.
