Dr. Ian Beddis

Dr. Ian D. Beddis, of Calgary, Alta., has been chosen as the first recipient of the Brock University Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award.

Dr. Beddis is a graduate from Brock's first honours graduating class in 1968 and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Brock in 2000 to recognize his achievements. He has led a distinguished career in Canadian business in various executive positions over the last quarter century. Respected for his integrity, leadership skills, work ethic and enthusiasm, he has significantly impacted the activities and commitments of his family, friends, colleagues and employees.

"To be chosen as the first recipient of the Brock University Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award out of approximately 44,000 alumni is a huge honour," says Dr. Beddis.

"This award was established to recognize a graduate who has earned prominence as a result of their exceptional professional achievements and service to society," says Scott Maxwell, President of the Brock University Alumni Association. "The selection of only one distinguished graduate was incredibly difficult and the entire alumni community can take pride in the significant accomplishments of Dr. Beddis."

Dr. Beddis attended Brock as a student from 1964 to 1968. During these years, he was involved and contributed to every aspect of University life. He was the President of the Brock University Students Union in 1968 and twice received the Vice Chancellor's Trophy for extracurricular and academic excellence.

Dr. Beddis received his Honours Science degree in Mathematics and Economics in 1968 and was a member of Brock's first Honours graduation class and a Silver Badger. He received his MA in Economics from the University of Western Ontario in 1969. He continued his involvement with Brock as the president of the Alumni Association from 1969 to 1978 and was the driving force behind such projects as the Wall of Fame to recognize the achievement of Brock athletes.

Dr. Beddis is a Director and Branch Manager for ScotiaMcLeod in their Calgary office. Before joining ScotiaMcLeod in 2000, he was a Vice President and Director and Branch Manager for RBC Dominion Securities in Calgary. He is known for his ability to attract, train and mentor high caliber staff and has built the Calgary branches of both ScotiaMcLeod and RBC Dominion Securities into top branches in their respective companies.

For over 20 years, Dr. Beddis has been a leader in Calgary's investment industry. He has served on many national industry boards and has held the position of Chairman of the Alberta Stock Exchange and Chairman of the Alberta District of the Investment Dealers Association.

Dr. Beddis has been a true friend, advocate and champion in the Calgary area. His passion for the cultural and educational vitality of the community has been outstanding. He has served on the Theatre Calgary Board since 1990 in various roles. He is best known for his time as chair of Theatre Calgary, Calgary's leading live theatre company. During that time, he orchestrated a significant financial campaign to save the organization from bankruptcy and then guided the theatre back to the financial health it enjoys today. He chaired the Board of Governors of Strathcona Tweedsmuir School, Alberta's pre-eminent independent school. He also has provided long-term leadership support as a board member for many community programs such as Crimestoppers, the United Way and the Carthy Foundation. Dr. Beddis was recently recognized nationally by his colleagues from ScotiaMcLeod for his community leadership. Most recently, he was nominated for a Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal.
