BLN Post #1: Technology In A New Light
Over the last week, I have learned a lot of ways to integrate technology into the classroom setting. When I was growing up, computers weren’t a big part of my school experience, so I didn’t learn too much about how to use them. At home, when we finally bought a computer, I learned how to use the internet on my own, but at school, I didn’t learn a lot about computers. Things have definitely changed since I was in elementary school. Children are being introduced to computers at a much younger age and most people have working computers in their homes. Therefore we need to change out way of teaching to accommodate this change. This technology course is teaching me new ways that students can use their computers as a helpful learning tool.
Some tools that I’ve found to be useful include: Web 2.0 tools (i.e. Del.icio.us, youtube, podcasts, wikis, etc) as well as webquests. Web 2.0. tools are great for collecting and storing useful information about specific topics so that you can build a collection of useful resources to use again and again. Webquests are great ways to engage your students in learning; since they often include games and fun activities. I will definitely be using webquests in one or both of my teaching blocks since I believe they are a FUN way to learn the curriculum.
I’ve never been good with computers, but this course is teaching me lots of new skills. For example, how to narrow down your google search so that you get the best information for the topic you’re searching for. I’m also learning more basic skills like, how to write a blog.
I believe all these new acquired skills will help me to be a successful teacher in today's modern society.
